Maggie McIntosh that would tax developers for each section of IMPERVIOUS surface they installed on certain properties. We are not suggesting paving the city with wood chips. Far from it. Unfortunately, these micro issues are extrapolated and applied to larger issues. It seemed to us that landscaping with woodchips on private property did not require the city's intervention or worse, fine. As to the inability of "old" earth with lots of human use, to absorb rain water, we don't have the specifics. We would be happy if you could direct us to some source that details the issue. Thanks for your interest and response, it really helps to get the issues debated.bcahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14230856885627999179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-512187772836874708.post-49235644831548705382010-02-16T10:35:46.421-08:002010-02-16T10:35:46.421-08:00Honestly, the notion that a 2" layer of wood ...Honestly, the notion that a 2" layer of wood chips will absorb significantly much more runoff than concrete is pretty silly in an old neighborhood like Butchers Hill.

The soil (and subsoil) underneath the parking pad are so compacted and (from a soil structure standpoint) absolutely destroyed from 200+ years of human activity that it has very limited (or no) ability to absorb rainwater.

Do we need to upgrade the codes to "do more good than harm?" Absolutely, and ASAP. But let's stop with this thinking that just by removing concrete, that we are exposing virgin, arable soil to rainwater.

Can you imagine the anti-green backlash if all of downtown Baltimore was overlayed with 2" of wood chips, and the Patapsco continued to be polluted? Yet, that's exactly what some are pushing for..."looking" green without acknowledging the true (but necessary and valid) cost of GETTING green.Kirk Mantayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06556560258304201823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-512187772836874708.post-19493953939370861272010-02-03T13:38:31.714-08:002010-02-03T13:38:31.714-08:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.オテモヤンhttp://e-nixi.com/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-512187772836874708.post-64911521914849301652010-01-26T09:07:39.074-08:002010-01-26T09:07:39.074-08:00Anonymous, thanks for that reminder about the bure...Anonymous, thanks for that reminder about the bureaucracies, we have been there. The next was, "how excessive." As the owner noted, this is what one can do when one has excess time, capital and enthusiasm. Hmm. Somehow I believe it does advance the thinking about architectural solutions. Given the environmental (and political?) havoc predicted for our future, this decorative, utilitarian idea may wind-up providing a survivalist solution for safer shelter. This, of course, presupposes a civilized society with an economy, after "the havoc" hits! Until then, "Awesome."bcahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14230856885627999179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-512187772836874708.post-73258754633442391052010-01-12T18:52:32.210-08:002010-01-12T18:52:32.210-08:00When I saw this written up some time ago, I though...When I saw this written up some time ago, I thought the project a bit gimmicky — and the fidgety sped-up film effect here only reinforces the impression for me. We fear that the urgent action required by climate change is being subsumed in the anxiety of the world-wide recessive economy. Even though the science is irrefutable, we are fighting an ancient battle between progress and delusion. Remember, the US has a woman named Sarah Palin who is actually being considered presidential.
